Hong is a scenic limestone island surrounded by a steep cliff wall resembling a large room with only one entrance and an open sky. The Hong Island allows kayaking through the inner lagoon, only accessible by canoe. This inner lagoon is a sensational, enclosed pool with a large chimney opening to the sky. Hence the origin of the island’s name – the Hong means a closed room. You will find perfect opportunities for photography while feeling like a real explorer.
The only way inside the lagoon is during a small time window throughout the day (about 30 minutes). If the sea tides are just right, you can canoe into Hong. When the sea is receding, the caves dry out, blocking access by sharp stones and mud. While during the high tide, access into Hong is blocked by the water.
In addition to Hong Island, there smaller islands nearby promising a diverse mangrove ecosystem that is full of exotic birds, lizards, and occasional wild monkeys. It is a perfect place for paddle-boarding or kayaking along the shores. Let the peaceful sounds of nature to really soak in. Hong Island is only 20-30 minutes reach from Phuket by boat, and it is always included in visited sights during a typical day trip.
