Gili Trawangan

Indonesia Gili Trawangan Guide

Gili Trawangan is fAmed for being the largest of all three Gili islands, and that brings with it the other things which set it apart from the remaining two. With a brighter party life scene, more beaches to behold, and an array of touristy infrastructure, it is the most developed of all the three islands making up the Gili landscape.

Situated with its other two sisters in the same place, Gili Trawangan finds home on the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. It is one of the outlying islands in the triplet setup, keeping Gili Meno in the middle while having Gili Air on the other extreme.

If you would like to enjoy the things that are possible on the bigger islands, but without all the noise, the hustle and bustle, Gili Trawangan is the place to be. The island has a relatively small 1500 population, so you won’t be choked by having too many people like you would face in either of Bali and Lombok. Even at that, though, you get to enjoy a party vibe, partake of vibrant nightlife, and scout a wide array of international restaurants on the ground to appeal to different taste buds. At the same time, the island has a collection of beautiful beaches that feature the powdery White Sands that have come to be known with Gili islands over time.

Much like the other islands in the Gili setup, the best time to visit Gili Trawangan is between September and November. That is not only because of the great weather in these months but because that is a time when the location won’t be too packed with tourists. Generally, you want to avoid months between July – August and December – January as they are peak tourist seasons, and you would have a lot of people around. The same goes for November to April, during which the rainy season is in swing.

Due to the high rate of development which this area has enjoyed, you will find an assortment of accommodation options here. RAnging from hostel and bungalows to homestays, there is almost nothing you are looking for that won’t be present on Gili Trawangan. The choice of your location should be based on what you would like to get out of your trip. Thus, party and nightlife lovers can stay anywhere except for the western side of the island. Others should go for the peace and quiet that they can get on the eastern ends.

Bali and Lombok are the first two islands to come to mind here. They are also the largest islands in Indonesia, so you might as well hop on them to know what the hype is all about. You should not also forget that Gili Trawangan is part of a triplet, so you should do well to see both Gili Meno and Gili Air. When you are done with that, move on to all of the Nusa islands (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan) and South Gilis (Gili Nanggu, Gili Gede, Gili Kedis, Gili Genting, Gili Asahan, Gili Sudak, Gili Layar) to have even more fun.

Nusa Penida offers more to those seeking adventures than Gili Trawangan due to the more natural landscape available for exploration. However, it fails when it comes to throwing a great party. Even though Gili T is small, they do know how to throw a mean party there. Finally, a choice on the scenery and landscape will usually come down to personal preferences. As both locations offer great accessibility, too, that won’t be a huge factor in your decision-making.

Gili Air marries the best of Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan, offering these features in balanced doses. This is the biggest win the location has over Gili Trawangan. Also packing an assortment of beaches, it is the ideal location for people who want a switch between serene and highlife, depending on their state of mind.

There could not be better opposites than this in the same place. While Gili T is the biggest of all three islands, Gili Meno is the smallest. This instantly puts Gili T on the map for more tourists, infuses a party vibe into the location, and brings with it an assortment of developments to match the influx of tourists. All that heavyweight is lost on Gili Meno. When it comes to having a romantic or tranquil escape, which is not devoid of fun, though, Gili Meno is unbeatable.
